Riley, our 160+ pound Newfoundland-Lab mix, has been a CFC client since 2004. I can honestly say that swimming at CFC is the be-all-end-all of his existence. When I arrive home from work on swimming nights, he can scarcely contain his excitement, and each time he rushes into th e pool with unabashed joy, creating a virtual tidal wave.
We first started swimming Riley for non-weight bearing exercise and as a fun activity for him, since both Newfies and Labs are natural-born swimmers. Then, in 2006, he ruptured his ACL and had surgery to repair it. After his surgery, swimming at the CFC became incredible therapy for him. The staff let him go at his own pace, and today he is fully recovered.
The CFC is 45 minutes away from our home, and, while there are closer facilities, it.s totally worth the drive. Maury, Lynn, Irma, and the rest of the CFC staff are not in this for the money.they TRULY love dogs and are concerned for their emotional and physical well-being. I really enjoy watching them interact with Riley every week, but I also like to watch them with the other dogs. Some dogs are like Riley and take to it right away, while others demonstrate a natural initial apprehension. The staff takes each dog.s personality into consideration, and works with them accordingly. It.s amazing and inspiring to watch a frightened dog blossom under the CFC staff.s patient guidance into the swimmer he or she was born to be.
I highly recommend swimming for all dogs, whether for therapy, exercise, or just plain fun. The CFC is the perfect place to .test the waters.. Your dog will thank you a million times over!
