Swimming F.A.Q.
Do only dogs recovering from surgery swim at the Canine Fitness Center?
No, only about 1/3rd of our customers swim their dogs for therapeutic purposes; 2/3rd come for fun or fitness.
What are the benefits of swimming?
Just like for humans, swimming is the best form of exercise for your pet. They work every muscle group, work their joints with no impact and do so with the benefit of 80o water. Also, 5 minutes of swimming is purported to be the cardio equivalent of a 5 mile walk
How big are the pools?
14 feet wide X 26 feet long X 4 feet deep.
What temperature is the water?
80 degrees Fahrenheit
Are the pools chlorinated?
Yes . slightly. We have ozone generators for our primary sanitizer so we only need to maintain 1 part per million of chlorine (less than most municipal water systems).
Can the chlorine harm my dog?
No - chlorine is used in human swimming pools because it is the most effective method of ensuring the water is germ and bacteria free. Canine pools have used chlorine safely, at far higher levels than we employ, for over 15 years. Additionally, every dog is rinsed and dried at the end of the swim session
What do I need to bring?
Only your dog(s) and shot records -we provide swim vests, a large variety of water toys, a shower facility with both an air dryer (non-heating) and towels.
How often should I come?
Your vet should be consulted because it depends on your dog's condition and fitness level. From experience we find that in the early stages 2 . 3 times per week is needed. As the response improves along with your dog's general fitness level then only once per week may suffice.
What results can I expect?
Your feedback is necessary to gauge the progress being made. Generally you will see improved fitness, lameness reduced and overall health and wellbeing improved.
Is swimming suitable for my older dog?
Absolutely - it can lead to a new lease of life.
